Olympic National Park advice

Hello all, my first post on Jim's new forum.
Just retired and moved from Salt Lake City to the Seattle area.
I would like to get out for a little shooting and thought Olympic NP would be nice to try.
Can anybody point me towards some useful information about good spots for sunrises and sunsets?
I am thinking about staying in or near Port Angeles, but advice regarding where to stay would also be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob

PS Would extend the trip for an extra day if I got a lead on a good trout stream to fly fish while I'm up that way.

Hey Bob,

Welcome to FocalWorld! It is really great to have you here. :)

Quite a few of the members are very acquainted with Olympics NP, so hopefully they will chime in here soon.

Hi Bob.

You couldn't pick a better area for your trip and you are near enough to time it with some hope of weather. There are many on this site who could advise you of good places to visit in the Olympic Peninsula. Usually when we do a trip to the area (and I've done many over the last 10+ years) we tend to stay in Forks rather than Port Angeles, as it is more central to the interesting sites - except for the Hurricane Ridge/Crescent Lake areas. Forks is about 60 miles from PA and is in easy reach of spectacular beaches, rain forests etc. I will be pleased, as will many others here, to advise you on specific locations. I expect you will hear soon from Tim who lives in the PA area! :)

Hi Bob, I am also new here and glad to see familiar faces. I am not an expert on the OP but I stayed in Forks for the same reason mentioned by Martin.

We know each other from a desert Southwest trip several years ago. I live in Sequim for the last ten years. Actually going up on Hurricane Ridge tonight to shoot the Milky Way after the sunset. If you want to shoot the beaches, Forks is a good location. About 18 miles to First, Seconand Third beaches and Rialto. About 28 miles to Ruby Beach and 35 to Kalaloch. On the way to Ruby there is a cut off to the Hoh rainforest. After you go west from Port Angels, you pass Elwha Valley at about 8 miles, and go around Lake Crescent about 15 miles further. Warning, there is highway construction on the Lake Crescent road, and we had about a forty minute wait there. Accommodations at Port Angeles for Elwha and Lake Crescent. For the beaches, Forks is best. Check the tides for sunsets, as low tide is desirable. Lots of accommodations in Both towns.

I would try the forks area which is closer to many of locations (beaches, rain forest). Port Angeles has more lodging options but farther away.
