Laze-y, haze-y day

Heavy haze (they call it laze when it's lava + haze + sea water = HCl + glass shards) and vog (SO2 from reaction w/sunlight, O2 & atmospheric moisture) obscured the fountain in Fissure 8, the most active of the fissures. The flow was quite different than on the last heli flight 3 days ago.

Some of these are SOOC though on #2 & 4

I did some de-hazing

W.O.W. These are just amazing sights. I hate picking a favorite because these are all jaw dropping but that last one with the glowing fountain at the back is incredible. So is the first one.

Awesome Monika! I sure like these with the last one being my favorite. It’s so cool to see the fountain of lava in the background and then see it flowing across the land.

I love any lava pic, but the scale in the last one is amazing.
Even flying in to Hilo at night, the view on the other side of the plane (I was on the wrong side) was amazing even looking through peoples phones as they took pics or videos. The scale of it really hit me. I knew it was an 8 mile long river, but to actually see it in relation to the entire island was incredible.

I may miss wildflower season back home because of this trip, but flowers bloom annually and this is most likely a truly once in a lifetime event. Not that I’ll be staying much longer, but just can’t take the whole summer off!being self employed means that I can take time off pretty much when I want, but also if I don’t work, I don’t get paid......same with retirement.

I was looking at some info online last night for this volcanic event and ran across some footage that the USGS posted from 6/29. Definitely worth a view if you have the time (about 15 minutes). Especially notable - the view of a USGS photographer setting up for some stills next to the lava river.

Thanks for sharing that link, Alan. I have never seen lava flowing so rapidly. The lava must have a very low viscosity because of the temperature or the composition or maybe both. I never would have been attempting to make a photograph so close to the flow with all those lava bombs flying around.

The scale of this is best represented by your last image Monika, imho. Your experience is certainly worth whatever money you could be making elsewhere.

The videographer & photographer I've been working with here were both talking about that footage & how fast the lava is moving. USGS gets to fly much lower than the 3000' mandated by the FAA as well as going into the active area.

I thought it was interesting that the researcher, while he had a hard hat on, had no eye protection or respirator.

In case any of you are curious, here's footage of the animal rescue. Large animals, as in cows. The net/trap was designed by a guy on Maui.
