Best of 2019

I published a list with a full write-up on my website here. Since then I decided to swap out one image that I captured on New Year's Eve. I had a chance to visit some beautiful places again this year. These are in the order I captured them.

1) Swirls of the Wave - I got lucky with the lottery and made my pilgrimage to this beautiful area. There are a bunch of shots I could have picked as my favorite, but I'm going with this one since it is a little less iconic (and a little more mine) and was also my first assignment win with Outdoor Photographer.

2) Moonlit Joshua Tree - I snuck out of a family gathering in Palm Springs to meet Jim Fox for a night in Joshua Tree.

3) Heart Lake Sunset - I have been here many times but this is the first great sunset I've seen from this spot. Mount Shasta, reflections, color... what else do you need?

4) Eagle River and Moose - After spending all day hiking around Alaska looking for wildlife, two moose decided to ruin my sunset shot in Chugach State Park. Darn it!

5) Sashimi (or Tuna Roll) - Katmai National Park had been on my bucket list for a while and this year I made it. I have hundreds of images with large brown bears, but this one is my favorite - while I know the bear is just chewing, it sure looks like he's daring anyone to try taking his fish.

6) Hidden Lake - I had never been to Glacier and I enjoyed being able to spend a few days there with my wife, who usually doesn't join me for photo trips. We enjoyed a beautiful evening at Hidden Lake (including seeing another bear) and the pictures weren't too bad either.

7) Climbing Kids - After hanging out with bears in Katmai, I'd have never expected my favorite wildlife experience this year to be with mountain goats in Glacier. These guys just wouldn't leave us alone. Just when I thought they managed to get stuck on this rock, they scrambled down like pros. I do like the way one seems to be pushing the other in this one.

8) Sea Ranch Chapel - I stopped by this small chapel while visiting my parents on the Mendocino Coast. I has happy with how the stars lined up with its unique architecture and a little light painting took care of the rest.

9) Haleakala Sunrise - Another family trip, this one to Maui. I dragged them out of bed in the dark for a cold morning on top of a volcano. It was a lot of fun hanging out with them as the view unfolded below.

10) Salt Point Waterfall - this replaces another Hawaii image from my original list. I had wanted to shoot this small waterfall on the Sonoma Coast and I was able to make my way out there on New Year's Eve while the rest of my family was sleeping. An incoming swell from Alaska add to the motion in the water.

These are really all awesome! I know if we had a Post your Best 20 from 2019 you would easily fill that up too. My favorites from this are #2, 3 and #5, 6.

You have been doing an amazing job of hitting up just about every photographer's bucket list of sites to shoot and 2019 looks to have been another banner year for that. I refuse to pick favorites out of this set - they are all a pleasure to view.

Wow, great year for you, all are beautiful so hard to pick favorites. #4 is really special though - the moose in the water is in perfect position to stand out, but then you find the closer moose in the bushes which takes it over the top. Of course the beautiful light on the mountains (which is perfectly handled) doesn't hurt!
