Best of 2021

2021 wasn't my best year for photography with a lot of health related issues keeping me from getting out to do nearly as much photography as I would have liked and quite a few months where I was relegated to using my iPhone instead of my DSLR gear. That said I did still get quite a few images that left me happy I had taken them in spite of the fact that most of the images I posted on here this last year consisted of archive imagery.

1. I had one of my old DSLR's converted to a 590nm IR sensor and did get some fun results - in this case a dogwood near the Columbia River in full bloom:

2. I added a 720nm filter to my IR converted camera body and got some fun results in our backyard. In this case just after some rain:

3. I spent a lot of time doing neighborhood walks with lifting restrictions that ruled out my DSLR but got to see a lot more of the local spring flowers than I usually do and got some fun treats along the way. These are called Purple Sun daisies and were a delightful twist on the usual front yard flower bed plantings:

4. A backyard flower scene once I finally got cleared to use my DSLR again - out looking for bees and got some really nice backlight on some of the blooms. In this case a lily:

5. Another from the yard - backlighting for a cone flower:

6. The macro capabilities of an iPhone 13 Pro really got my attention with this shot of an oak leaf after some overnight rain:

7. I yanked out the IR converted camera body for some sessions at Shore Acres State Park in early fall and got this shot using my 720nm filter:

8. Spent a rainy day exploring the road that follows the North Fork of the Siuslaw River near Florence, Oregon. Definitely one of the better side trips I took this fall:

9. Did a return trip to Sweet Creek to catch peak colors along the trail. This is Elk Wallow Falls:

10. Most recently on a road trip down to the Brookings area near the OR/CA border:

#7 is the standout for me. You managed to get such subtle tonality differences in the rock. #9 is also a standout for the great many clean falls. Very nice Alan!

Oh boy Alan! First off, I don't know how you picked out just 10. I have gone through mine and came up with 277 images I posted in individual threads. I should have gone through the Community threads too, but at 277, I don't have a clue how I am to prune it down to 10.... Maybe we should make this the Top 40.... :)

I am going to try and pick out favorites here, the hard part is that after just a slow scroll through them, they all look like my favorites. Not sure I can get it down to just 3 or 4.... but let me scroll back up and try.....

Okay... I am going to go with #1, 2, 7 and 8. But all of those flower images are so cool.

I hope it's okay, but I will say your #10 image? For me it's maybe your weakest one from your recent trip. It's a nice image, but I thought you had 2 or 3 that were really stand out. Maybe reconsider your choice for #10?

Thanks Jim - I posted a lot of images over the past year but I didn't actually shoot all that many compared to my usual output. I might swap out the last one since I haven't processed most of the images I took on this last trip. I have one I just finished that might be a good candidate.

I'm so used to seeing your landscapes that you really caught me by surprise with the IR and flower images. I think the 2nd is my overall favorite. Just really well executed. I also really like the first one - a unique but still classic dogwood image and I love the colors in the 3rd as well. Nice work.
