Rusty gear box.

This vessel was made from Yellow Cedar and is about 8" tall. I used a beading tool to create beads around the circumference then a small gouge to cut away portions of the bead. The idea was to create a texture that looked like old bicycle gears stacked on top of each other. I used acrylic paints to attempt a rusted iron look. That was partially successful.
The top 'gear' is carved as part of the lid. The rings separating the top of the box are made from Walnut.

Beautiful result. It looks like you used different radius gouges along the beads from bottom to top with wider ones in the wide portions of the vessel. Not a small task to carve all of those out. It does look like one of the old school racing clusters with ultra tight gear spacing from the 60's and 70's.

Impeccable craftsmanship! The top does resemble a bike's rear gear cluster!

And the piece is well lighted and photograhed. Colors and textures pop!

Wow! I like your creativity with this. Making that beaded look really must take a lot of work.

Very creative. Good work with the paint - I wouldn't have known. How long did this one take you?
Thanks Kurt... It is hard to know how long these projects take for me. I start on one and become a Magpie, moving to the next shiny object and then return to the piece. I worked on it off and on over a month.
