Tentative Steps

I finally got to shoot something in the Real World(TM) instead of my neighborhood yesterday. I have to confess that I was almost a bit rattled about pulling the drone out and launching it from the edge of a very quiet lake in a state park instead of my driveway and wasn't thinking clearly about my intentions beyond sending the drone up.

This is Lake Marie which is a small lake tucked in between inactive sand dunes in the Umpqua Lighthouse State Park just south of the Reedsport/Winchester Bay area. I discovered that I should have done this as a panorama but I didn't figure that out until I was back in my campsite.

A gratuitous shot of the lighthouse from above:

Hopefully I will get some better images today as I migrate down the coast to Brookings.

C&C always welcome.

These look good Alan, nice color and sharpness. Did you shoot them at the high res. setting? When I have a good shot I almost always do at least a two frame pano. I tried the pano mode in camera, but wasn't impressed.

Thanks Jim - yes these were shot in 48mp mode. The few panos I tried with the built-in function at home failed to impress me so I will be following your path in yawing the drone to get my panos as individual shots. I will be looking to shoot more panoramas today

My burst mode is limited to 12mp resolution and there seems to be a fair amount of movement of the drone in flight so the time lag I get while the first image is being written ends up with a lot of alignment issues. I tried rapidly pressing the shutter release to get a burst but it won't do a second image until the first one has been written.

Great job Alan! I know we have been there with the wishing we had done something different, but not until we are done and can’t do it… :) hindsight is awesome! ;)

I like the Lake Marie shot as it is though. I don’t think there was a need for a pano.

Good job on your first steps. I still hope I can run up to the Eastern Sierra maybe tomorrow and fly my drone some.

Nice shot of the Lake. The deep blue waters probably don't look that color from the ground.

I thought your neighborhood is in the Real World as well - unless you are living in the Metaverse :)

I did a lot more looking around once I was up in the air today and took several panos on the way down to Brookings. The shot felt a bit cutoff on the sides but there really wasn't much more to see unless I flew over the lake looking straight down. There is a trail that leads around the lake but very few good viewpoints to shoot from. I spent a night at this campground a few ago and hiked the trail with my DSLR.

Thanks Jameel - The lake has very clear water down close but it does reflect the skies quite well when the water is still.

After only shooting right around my neighborhood for a couple of weeks flying somewhere else felt like a different place :)
I can't say that the metaverse holds my interest at all - especially variants of it inhabited by FacePlant.
