The Best Way to See the Colors of Cape Horn

The best way to view colors on the face of Cape Horn on the Washington side of the Gorge is to go to Oregon. The overlook at Cape Horn is one of the best aerial views of the Gorge besides Crown Point on the Oregon side of the river but there is no view of the cliffs below Cape Horn from Cape Horn itself. The view shown here was a drone shot from over the south part of Rooster Rock State Park. I dropped the drone low enough to use a low bluff next to the I-84 freeway as a foreground which blocks out the interstate and the parking area at the park. It would be nice to time a visit like this to catch one of the BNSF trains coming out of the tunnel at the base of the cliffs but I have no idea where I could find a schedule for the trains along various viewpoints like this one. This shot was one of the better fall color images I managed to get from the Gorge this year which was quite disappointing after last year's glorious displays. Single panel at 166mm.

Super cool Alan. It's funny how you have to go to one state to get the best view of an object in another state. :)
Thanks Jim - I was thinking the same thing as I squeezed of the shot. Even if you launch a drone from above the cliffs you can't really get far enough away from them to get a shot like this since you will be over 600' above ground (water) level once you fly out over the river. There is a trail that drops down below the roadway but that's part of a no-fly zone right at Cape Horn itself. From Rooster Rock State Park you can shoot the Cape Horn cliffs from the beach without a drone but I was already up in the air to shoot fall colors below Crown Point.
