Yosemite Firefall 2025

Hi y'all

This past winter didn’t bring much snowfall, so I was hesitant to visit Yosemite Valley for the Firefall. But as luck would have it, during the second week of February, we got some much-needed, belated snow!

I captured several timelapse videos of the phenomenon this year, using a 600mm lens to get more detailed shots. What an incredible surprise!

On a different note, the recent gutting of National Park Services has been deeply saddening. Over the years, I’ve had nothing but positive experiences with park rangers, BLM staff, and NPS employees. These dedicated individuals work for minimum wages, and now, many of them have been laid off.

While taking photos, I noticed a massive flag at the top of Horsetail Fall but wasn’t sure what was happening. Only after returning home did I learn that it was an upside-down American flag.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle:

"The flag, measuring 30 feet by 50 feet, was displayed by a group of frustrated Park Service workers, some of whom rappelled down the side of El Capitan, which rises more than 3,000 feet above the base of Yosemite Valley."
"The protest organizers could not immediately be reached on Monday. One of them, Gavin Carpenter, told The Chronicle that he was a maintenance mechanic at Yosemite and a disabled military veteran who had supplied the flag."
What a strange and uncertain time we’re living in.

Critique and comments are welcome.

I missed this one Oliver, sorry about that. I like your video, you did great on the capture.

Did you get any photos of the upside down American Flag? That would be something.
