Zion plus channel swap

Zion National Park in the fall is another great location for IR. This image was made with a 665nm converted Nikon D90, one of the last Nikon cameras that would allow you to set a custom WB in camera after IR conversion. Back then a CWB made from metering green grass in bright sun gave great results, so you would save the CWB setting and always use that. This made post processing much easier, and more importantly, allowed consistent repeatable results. The image below shows what you get straight out of camera (with levels adjusted) on the left, and the right side shows that after swapping the red and blue color channels.

Nice comparison. My preference here is the channel swapped version with the nice deep blues in the sky.

Thanks Alan. Most people do prefer to see blue skies in color IR, it's a little less abstract and therefore easier to digest. I usually try both and see what looks best to me in each particular situation.

Hey Michael, I typically end up with non channel swapped, as I like the weird colors. But in this case I like the false colors in #2 with the channel swap. It's odd how I seem to like channel swapped images better when someone else does it than in my own IR images. Not sure why that is.
