Lunar Eclipse, New Zealand

I was fortunate to have crystal-clear skies for this morning's lunar eclipse, but I was unfortunate that it was going to happen just before dawn. Nevertheless I headed out at 3am or so to my still-under-construction (but on pause) new house where there would be no obstacles to the west so I could view the eclipse for its duration until dawn interceded. I shot with two devices--a Seestar S50 and a Canon R5. With the S50 I went for a timelapse approach, shooting a frame every second for almost two hours, and with the R5 I started off with an 800mm lens and shooting at 5-second intervals until totality settled in, and then I switched to a 70mm to get the moon in the context of the mountains (sorry for including some landscape in this category!).

Awesome work James! You didn't get a lot of time with the eclipse but you made the most of it.

I am curious, how did the timelapse on the S50 do? Any issues with the final product?

Even though I couldn't see the Lunar eclipse from the US, I pretended I could last night and went out and captured the moon with my S50.

James, I love your lunar eclipse shots ! For some odd reasons, here in the Bay Area we rarely have good weather on the Lunar eclipse nights.

Thanks! The Timelapse function worked pretty well for most of the eclipse, and kept the moon well centred until just about the point where the shadow of the Earth completely covered the Moon, then all bets were off and things went all cattywompus (sic). But overall I was happy with how it worked. I managed to turn the output into a usable video that I sped up so it wouldn’t take 3-1/2 minutes to sit through the whole thing.

Thank you! Which Bay Area are you referring to? The Bay of Plenty, Bay of Islands (both in NZ) or some bay in the U.S. (where I don’t think the eclipse was visible this week).
