Sh2-216 is one of the older planetary nebulae at an approximate age of around 600,000 years. This has contributed to its large size and faintness, as the gases continue to spread out as they interact with the interstellar medium. The left edge of the nebula exhibits a bow shock as the moving forefront of the nebula meets the resistance of the surrounding gas. This is also one of the closest planetary nebulae to Earth, being an estimated 420 ly distant.
This was imaged in all 3 narrowband channels and then blended into a final palette by combining an SHO and Foraxx mix using PixInsight's ImageBlend script. Thanks go to kvastronomer from Astrobin for inspiration for this blending technique. I am calling this SHO-Raxx for lack of a better term
I also used the new WBPP script (version 2.9.1) that includes a Frame Selector tool that can be either interactively or automatically employed to help cull images. Using that after a quick peek with the Blink tool looks to be a great PixInsight way to cull images going forward and prevents a separate invocation step with the PixInsight Subframe Selector Tool.
As always, any feedback is most appreciated. As I mentioned elsewhere on this forum, this is iteration 6! of this object. I think I am finally done editing it (but I wouldn't want to promise anything...
