Queen Butterfly-1589-Edit.jpg

The Queen Butterfly has no crown, no throne, and no subjects. Apparently, being a queen is enough.

two-tailed swallowtail butterfly-5375-Edit.jpg

A Two-tailed Swallowtail enjoying a little nectar. Apparently, two tails are better than one, although neither is much use for wagging.

Luna moth:
A rare beauty that doesn't need moonlight to shine.

The Rosy Maple Moth. Proof that Mother Nature occasionally shops in the candy aisle.

Red Kites from Southern Scotland last Thursday. Up to 50 birds floating around but most stayed high

They appear to be effortless gliders with a 6ft wingspan and a slender body weighing up to 3lb. So almost the wingspan of a bald eagle but only a third of the weight.

They have a huge tail and use it to turn instantly

The effortless gliding does stop when they stoop to get food, this image is pin sharp on the tail feathers but starting to get soft around the head and I have applied all sorts of sharpening techniques to make it look ok

Back to effortless gliding

The light was very harsh and stopping the highlights blowing meant that the undersides of the birds were very dark, thankfully modern AI noise reduction saves the day. Ken
