I have to say, I am definitely catching the timelapse bug. I usually don't have the patience to leave my camera untouched for hours, but when I do the results have been fun. I'm using the Panasonic S1RII which has a really nice timelapse exposure leveling feature that creates smooth transitions...
I made a quick stop at Valley View before driving out of the park. Just in time for the Milky Way to spread across the scene.
Any thoughts are welcome.
The forecast looked good for a nice sunset yesterday and my wife is out of town, so I decided to head to Treasure Island and try to get a shot of San Francisco. There has been a lot of construction on the island since the last time I tried shooting there and I wasn't sure what to expect. As it...
I parked in the side lot on Saturday before hiking up to Inspiration Point. I walked over to the wall to take a look at the valley and saw these flowers that I had never noticed before. Maybe because I don't usually walk that far away from the viewpoint? Anyway, I decided I had to try to work...
I'm sure I am not alone as a landscape photographer in hoping for getting some great sunset light on mountains while also getting great color in the clouds. Unfortunately, this desire doesn't match reality as the "nice" light moves up during sunset, hitting the mountains first and then the...
I took a trek up the Pohono Trail from the Tunnel View parking lot last night to try getting the Milky Way over the valley from a higher than normal vantage point. As much as I love Tunnel View, it is "challenging" for night photography due to the constant activity in the parking lot as well as...
I shared some wider compositions previously, showing the light changing from sunset to darkness. I also tried some tighter compositions like this one to focus on the clouds, Wizard Island, and the light on the far cliffs. Any thoughts are welcome.
These are more for fun than as a serious landscape. I made my first trip to Lava Beds while in Klamath and enjoyed seeing some of the caves. Valentine was my favorite as it was long, easy to walk in, and had some branching tubes. I liked putting people (generally myself) into the photos for...
We were able to get pretty close to this eagle and I'd had enough practice at this point to be able to keep it in the frame as it took off. Two things I have learned as a novice bird photographer: nothing beats proximity to improve image quality; and don't frame too tightly if you want to get...
I was treated to a nice enough sunrise Saturday morning that I needed to swap from my 500mm lens to something wide enough to frame the beautiful light and reflections in the calm water.
Nearby eagle, warm morning light, what else could I want? The eagle was sitting on a sign, so while I do have some full body shots, I liked focusing on the had and shoulders.
1) Eagle Portrait
2) Ready for takeoff
While exploring the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday morning, we saw a bald eagle that seemed to be carrying something. I quickly pointed my camera in its direction and fired off some shots hoping to get something. Fortunately the one sharp frame I got included the wings in a...
I spent the weekend at the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge photographing bald eagles. I'll have a lot to share once I get through my images. I'll start off with something that I hope is a little unique. There was a gap in the clouds to the east just above the horizon, and when the sun...
I drove up to the Rim Center at Crater Lake Friday evening hoping for a nice sunset and some clear skies to photograph the stars overhead. Things worked out pretty good...
1) Sunset over Crater Lake
2) Wide skies during astronomical twilight
3) As the skies got darker, a purple tint crept...
I took a hike up to the overlook in Kalispell's Herron Park this morning. This is one of my favorite local hikes - both because it is close to home and because it features views all over the area. I'm sharing three images and as always any thoughts are welcome.
1) From the upper overlook...
Here are a couple from the "Old Steel Bridge" in Kalispell last night. Last week was rainy and warm (for December in Montana) but some snow came on Friday and by Sunder temperatures dropped into the teens. There was a break in the clouds so I decided to try a new location close to home. Any...
2025 was an unusual year for me photographically, as I didn't take any big photo trips this year. I did take an enjoyable European vacation with my wife, though, and you will see some samples from that here. I also have some images from the area around my home in Montana. With that introduction...
I had a free afternoon today and the weather forecast looked promising for Point Reyes, so I decided to take a drive. I hadn't been there in years so I was glad to have the chance to explore. I decided to try my luck at the sea stacks south of McClures beach. I arrived about an hour before...
The original Panasonic S1R had, charitably, a lousy focusing system. Panasonic greatly improved it in the S1R2, providing the kinds of subject detections that we've come to expect from modern mirrorless cameras. Combined with a 40 fps electronic shutter and excellent high ISO performance, I...
We've had a lot of clear blue skies lately, and snow and rain forecast for most of the next week. Tonight's sky was clear, but there were some clouds to the south east. I figured this nearby barn would work well with the clouds.
Any thoughts are welcome.
