Afternoon Storm at Blue Lakes

My wildflower hunting in Colorado this summer took me up to one of my normal haunts, Blue Lakes in the San Juan Mountains. This is actually the far end of Middle Blue Lakes, there is a really nice field of flowers with lot's of Columbine here. I didn't get to shoot too long though as not long after this there was some lightning starting to hit pretty close, so just as I had packed up to head back down the mountain a bit it then started hailing, so I stopped and quickly pulled on a poncho and headed down the trail to some relative safety to let the hail pass by.

All comments are welcome,

Jim

Blue flowers in front of Blue Lakes - fitting scenario. I like the ominous looking clouds and the mood they impart on the scene.

Yeah, it was pretty fitting. :)

It's funny though for as many people that hike up to Lower Blue Lakes which is almost 4 miles all uphill, there was really no one here at Middle Blue Lakes at it's only another 3/4 mile or so uphill. My only company was a lone fisherman about halfway down the shore.

Very nice, good example of working dark cloudy sky to your advantage (other than the story of the hail - did you dare take your camera out to capture that?).

Hi Jim,

Beautiful Composition and Perspective, The Clouds really add a touch of drama to top it all off !!!

Very Nicely Done.

Sorry Jim, but I have to laugh at your comment "only another 3/4 mile or so uphill" LOL Just another 800-100 vertical feet for another 3/4 mile carrying a load and they would have had to bury me up there! By the way... what time did you get back to the vehicle? But I like your attitude when we were climbing when the expected storm was approaching --something like "oh well it may not happen" when everyone else was bolting downhill trying to avoid a possible pelting from hail. :) Got to hand it to ya !! By the way the wait was worth it with these images to show for it. :)

Ha ha, thanks Neil! It's funny I have often noticed that as I am going one way, everyone else is coming back.

Thanks so much Jim!

There really wasn't anything to shoot with the hail, and the lightning was coming up fast behind me, maybe only a mile off so my focus at that point was to get down a bit to a safe area. From what I saw though for the most part the hail wasn't really visible enough that it could be captured. I could see it and of course feel it, but it didn't go on long enough to accumulate on the ground or anything.

That is one sweet image Jim. About as nice as it gets. The subtle light is magic. Worth a pelting any day. : )
