Antlia ALP-T filter vs L-Enhance

(The purpose of this is to demonstrate to anyone who has a wider Narrowband OSC filter like the Optolong L-Enhance just how much of an improvement there will be to their subs if they go to a narrower Narrowband filter like the Antlia ALP-T filter.)


I just picked up the Antlia ALP-T 5nm Dual Band filter as a stronger light pollution filter then my current Optolong L-Enhance filter. First thing I wanted to do was test to see how much of an improvement the Antlia would provide for me.

The Antlia ALP-T is a Ha and OIII filter with both bands being 5nm

The Optolong L-Enhance has Ha at 10nm and OIII is 24nm.

So the Antlia is a big jump in terms of how narrow it's wavelengths are. In terms of a real comparison as to a comparison the Antlia ALP-T actually fits between the L-Extreme (7nm) and the L-Ultimate (3nm).

For those reading this that aren't Astrophotographers the biggest effect in terms of using it is the more narrow the the band pass, the darker and less light it will let in. So going from that 10nm/24nm combo I had in the L-Enhance to the 5nm of the ALP-T is going to really increase my exposure times. In fact my exposure for the Tadpoles Nebula was 180 seconds with the L-Enhance, I had to increase it to 600 seconds for the ALP-T for the same exposure. 600 seconds or 10 minute exposures are nothing to sneeze at. A lot of Astrophotographers won't do 10 minute exposures as it requires the astro rig to be set up almost perfectly in terms of balance, polar alignment and guiding. I am fortunate that my setup runs 10 minute exposures really well, so that's not an issue for me.

So here are the two images, processed exactly the same in Pixinsight, with the same exact default settings in Background Neutralization, Color Calibration, SCNR, ABE, DBE, BlurExterminator, NoiseXterminator and EZStretch. Both images have pretty similar integration times as well.

1. Optolong L-Enhance 180 sec exposures for a total of almost 7 hours

The biggest thing I noticed was a stronger Ha signal and a lot more contrast. Remember there is no extra stretching or processing. These both are basically as close to straight out of the camera as one can get so they essentially are still in a raw state. One other thing to note, and I haven't posted them, but the stars are much more controlled also by the Antlia ALP-T. I didn't see any flaring around the stars, but that's typically reserved for really bright stars anyway. So I need to test that still.

For anyone interested who is ready to take a jump up from the L-Pro or L-Enhance filters to a narrower filter, I hope showing what the Antlia ALP-T can do is helpful.

Wow, I wondered how I was getting so much contrast with my images lately (after switching to the Antilia ALP-t) Great comparison, thanks for taking the imaging time to compile the comparison. A picture is worth a 1000 words.

Thanks Ed. Besides the stronger contrast, if you look at the what I will call the veins leading away from the tadpoles, those Ha veins are probably 3 times stronger in the ALP-T. So it's doing a better job of isolating the Ha signal from the background.

In my search for the next filter for me, I think I became a bit like Goldilocks. I wanted to stay in the Optolong family of filters, but I found that the L-Extreme at 7nm had the star Halo issue, and then the L-Ultimate at 3nm was just too restrictive and it sounded like it caused other issues with being too dark. But the Antlia ALP-T was just right at 5nm and no star Halo's. :)

So for my thinking I think it is hard to compare these when your subframe exposure lengths are so different, even if your total integration time is the same. I would like to see a comparison with not only the same total integration, but the same subframe duration as well...

The Antlia ALP-T is a 5nm Narrowband filter while the L-Enhance is 10nm Ha and 24nmon OIII. It would be like comparing 2stop ND and a 5stop ND. There is no way the exposures could be the same. To compare them with the histogram being similar to me is the best way to go.

If I had exposed the L-Enhance at a 10 min sub to match the Antlia ALP-T, the whole image would have been blown out with no detail left to stretch.

In the real world you wouldn't run 2 different strength NB filters, you would adjust the exposure based on their light blocking capacity. At least that's how I see it, so I think the way I did the test was good.

I suppose that makes sense. I am used to comparing NB filters of the same bandwidth.

I am glad you are trying those filters out and characterizing them as it does seem like they are going to behave differently. I would always favor the narrower filter in most scenarios I think. None of this has me even remotely considering OSC imaging personally. I suppose that if I did put together a small portable rig, maybe just maybe I would consider an OSC as it would simplify and lightweight the setup. But still a compromise I would not care to make.

Someday you will have to try out some mono imaging or at least get ahold of a comparable monband data set to see how the data can be put together.

Yep, I ageee one day I will have to get a mono camera. Maybe if I can ever get my gear setup in a remote observatory I would do that.
