Autumn Crocus

I wasn't expecting to see a crocus blooming in the fall when I wandered into our backyard yesterday so I grabbed a shot. Turns out my wife planted these a few years back and decided she didn't want them so she yanked them out but not before they had gone feral and pop up wherever they want now.

The plant isn't really a crocus but is Colchicum autumnale and isn't even a member of the crocus family. Sometimes know as naked boys or naked ladies because there are no leaves when the flowers appear.

That looks really cool. What a nice surprise for you.
Thanks Jim - definitely not what I was expecting to see and they weren't even close to beds that are cared for at all.

They are gorgeous flowers and especially to bloom in the fall.
Thanks Trent - at first I thought that maybe with the odd weather patterns they were confused but then my wife piped up and mentioned what they really were. Apparently they are quite toxic as an added feature
