Bridal Veil Falls

Another pre-sunrise experience in the Columbia River Gorge. This is a short trail, less than a mile round trip. The falls are short but steep and the topography around them doesn't lead to an obvious best composition. The falls "twist" at the mid tier, then twist again at the base, the creek turning 90 degrees. I didn't walk to the base for a straight on shot since that involved wading through knee deep water. maybe in the fall when water levels are lower. This shot is from the viewing platform about 50 feet above the creek,

Nice composition. Having been here a few times I forget how the road is right on top of the falls, but "hand of man" is obscured well in this framing. I also like the foreground rock anchoring the image better than just a pool of water.

Nice one - that's about as good a viewing angle as you can get for those falls. I have shot the rapids below the viewing platform more often than the falls themselves. This is another place where your pre sunrise visiting hours are highly useful. Daytime during the winter months ends up with a horrid sun angle at the top and deep darkness in the shadows.

I did try going upstream from the roadway once and then over to the top of the falls which was bit disappointing. There is no workable trail through the heavy brush along the banks. The other letdown was seeing the bridge footings for the historic highway - the concrete ledge is the squared off top of the falls in your image here. I always thought that was natural prior to seeing that.

Thanks Aaron, I wish that boulder wasn' t there. I wanted to see more of the rapids below, but it's in the direct path. There is a spot below the platform but it doesn't have as good a view of the middle tier. Probably a better spot on the steep slope, but that's an accident waiting to happen!
A bit of the bridge was visible from this view, but the clone tool covered it with leaves.
