Holland Tulip Festival 2025

So I had the good fortune to vacation in the Netherlands visiting family for 9 days who just moved there in Jan, then my wife and I took a 2-week river cruse starting in Amsterdam and ending in Vienna. I ended up taking 100’s of photos I will be sharing here over the next few weeks as I process them.

Equipment used almost exclusively was a Canon T7 with a Sigma 17-50 lens and processed using Affinity Photo. My main problem was I was always with a group and so most shots were “one the run”, not really getting to set up a shot as I would have preferred.

I most definitely am a newby-learning photography, so please feel free to comment on any photos you see which could have been made better if I had _______ (fill in the blank) LOL.

This 1st grouping is of the annual Holland Tulip Festival showcasing just flowers we came across while at the festival.

Hey Ed,

Thanks for taking us along with you by sharing these.

Overall, all of these look really good, and you did a good job recovering the highlights in the last one. I think overall you did great, compositions would be the one area that some of these might be just a little weak on. But learning good composition is something that can take years of practice. So as someone who is newer to using regular cameras, you did great.

#1 and 3 along with the triangle shaped Blue/Yellow flowers were my favorite.

Probably the 2 main composition rules to live by are: :)

1. Rule of Thirds. Place objects so that they are framed in thirds. You might even be able to chose an overlay on your viewfinder to place rule of third gridlines. So you can see it while composing.

2. Edges should be clean. You don't want objects just poking in along an edge. Like a single branch poking in from the side. Move or zoom to keep the branch, head, hand, half a rock, pathway, lawnmower, etc out of the frame.

3. Rules are made to be broken. :) Think of the rules as more like guidelines. They can be broken sometimes.

So on your next batch, keep an eye out for those 2 things, and crop your images to make them stronger while processing them.
