Had a day off of work last week for the weather, and since I'm staying at our hangar while I'm on call I got the chance to go for a hike in the local forest that I used to frequent when I lived in the area. I was hoping the little ponds froze enough overnight to get some cool patterns and I lucked out.

Really nice patterns in the ice in all of these images. Well seen and some great work with the stacking to get everything in focus like this.

Wow! That's so cool Jordan! I really like these patterns. #2 and 3 are my favorites.

I have been trying to find cool winter scenes here in Northern Colorado. I have been doing frozen bubbles to watch crystals grow in them. But as I have looked at the lakes and ponds here I haven't seen any cool patterns like you captured. Maybe I am too late for those.

Thanks Jim, I think you get these in decently shallow and still areas as they’re in the process of freezing but before it’s completely solid. I’d guess that any surface wind might have an effect too. It was pretty warm the day before and then dipped to the 20s overnight. I’ll be back down there in a few days so hopefully I’ll have another chance to grab some more.

That makes sense, I don't know of any local shallow ponds around here. Most of them are deeper and pretty large. I will keep my eye out.

I do hope you get a chance to get some more images from there.
