Is it really White Sands?

One of the amazing things about White Sands is that the white sand reflects the color in the sky that when processing the photos you actually have to process the sand separately if you want to keep that white feel. Otherwise the white sand can become blue, yellow, orange, purple, etc based on whats happening in the sky.

Here are 3 photos I made from a mad dash down there as I was heading back from to California from Colorado. The forecast showed clouds, so I hurried down there and got in there late in the afternoon. Each of these photos have to me a visual blemish somewhere, but in White Sands, sometimes you just have to shoot the dunes how they are, you can't always get those perfect sand dune ripples in the sand. :)

It's pretty easy to mess up a sandbox of that size but I like the set for the different mood each one evokes. I need to make it there one of these days.....

Beautiful takes, Jim. The sand there is actually gypsum powder and it truly does reflect any color in the sky. And on a clear day, especially early and late, the shadows are definitely blue toned.
It's personal preference, and these are lovely with great light, but I think I'd actually like to see some of the sky's color in the dunes.

Beautiful work Jim! As Barry, I am actually curious to see what the sand would look like with the sky reflecting in it :) Best regards,

Nice Jim. Interesting account. It's amazing how the brain adjusts colour to what it knows from what it sees. Photographs of cricketers often have a green tint on their white outfits. I like the skies you found here and the textures on the sand. Not a place |I have been to yet. :Sigh!:.........there are so many......
