My Photographic journey began more as a curiosity. My grandfather had a Rollieflex TLR and the very sight of this camera fascinated me. I started tinkering with it when I was in 7th grade. Of course, I didn’t know what I was doing – didn’t have any idea of exposure. Took random pictures around the house and learnt along the way. Having to sustain this with the meager pocket money, I soon realized I couldn’t afford both the film and the processing. So decided to try processing myself. Didn’t take long and the sight of an image taking shape in the darkroom was magical.
The next stage was a camera my dad bought – a Yashica Electro 35 range finder. The idea of taking color photos was quite a revelation. This is when the love of landscapes developed. Used it for a couple of years and then it was time to head to college to pursue engineering. Had to take a hiatus from photography while I was in college.
My first camera that I bought with my own money was a Minolta XG-1 SLR with a 50mm/f1.7 lens. I subsequently added a 28/2.8 to it. Graduated from there to my first Canon – T90 paired with 50/1.4, 28/2.8 and a 70-210 zoom. This is when I switched entirely to color slides. I still have both these camera – they just sit on a shelf for now. My film days are over. We moved houses in 2003 and as part of the move, the movers lost a few of the boxes. And among the boxes were my slide collection and the slide projector. So I don’t have any of my collection from the slides. Was quite a bummer.
Back in 2000, started the digital journey with a Nikon Coolpix 990 with a whopping 2MP. The first DSLR was a Canon 10D and a host of upgrades to several Canon DSLRs and now mirrorless.
In addition to landscapes, which is my primary genre, I also like doing people (which is mostly family and friends), macro and IR. My favorite hunting grounds are PNW and SW, although I have ventured east all the way to Vermont, New England and north into Canada – Banff, Vancouver, Manitoba.
