Just Before the Color Vanished

I launched my drone last evening with some cloud layers that looked promising. Right up until I got up high enough to see what was out along the horizon. Those of you who shoot out along the west coast will recognize the dreaded marine layer with the band of gray just above the horizon. The marine layer cloud cover extends well out over the Pacific beyond the coastline. Once the sun sinks below that layer the evening colors will disappear without a trace and that's exactly what happened just a few minutes after I squeezed off this 4 vertical panel panorama shot at 70mm.

C&C always welcome.

Nice light while it lasted. Know the feeling all too well - it can go from 'promising' to 'disappointing' in a matter of seconds.
Thanks Jameel - this was a short evening flight given what the marine layer did to the colors. At least I didn't travel some great distance to get skunked for the sunset :)

Yep, early is best along the coast sometimes. I have learned not to wait for what is normally peak pink and red colors, but that if you get gold, capture it, because gold might be all there is.

Good one Alan.

Thanks Jim - you have described the phenomena well and it happens more often than I would like. We had some rain yesterday and the cloud cover began to break up right near sunset. I launched with high hopes only to find another round of the marine layer lurking at the horizon. You already know the outcome of that.....
