Development of a next-generation full-frame mirrorless camera and NIKKOR lenses — featuring a new mount — that pursues a new dimension in optical performance

July 25, 2018

TOKYO - Nikon Corporation (Nikon) is pleased to announce the development of a full-frame, Nikon FX-format, mirrorless camera and NIKKOR lenses featuring a new mount.

The mirrorless camera and NIKKOR lenses that are in development have enabled the pursuit of a new dimension in optical performance, with the adoption of a new mount. The mirrorless camera is the result of Nikon's advanced optical and manufacturing capabilities gained through over a century of heritage, as well as superior image-processing technology. The expertise built up through the development of Nikon's digital SLR cameras has also critically contributed to this development.

With this new mirrorless camera and NIKKOR lenses, we are committed to providing photographers with the ability to capture images that are richer and more vivid than ever before.

Additionally, a new mount adapter is being developed for the new mirrorless camera. This will work with the NIKKOR F mount lenses that are part of the Nikon digital SLR system, adding to the variety of choices for photographers.

Nikon will continue to lead imaging culture with the launch of this new mirrorless camera, as well as with the continued development of Nikon digital SLR cameras, providing consumers with the choice of enjoying the unique values of either system.

Oh wow! It’s great that Nikon is finally getting that out, they have had a hole in their lineup without having a FF mirrorless.

Jim-since I haven't jumped at an 850 yet, it will be a consideration. I need to rebuild my kit after a mishap or two and some less than stellar purchases. Either a really good adapter for legacy lenses or the anticipation of a better than now new lens selection would be necessary along with a usable interface and view finder. However, right now, the rumor mill doesn't make it sound better than the 850, except for the newest camera factor.

Hmmmm. I guess this is good for those who want mirrorless. My D810 is just amazing and I dont want anything else.

Hey Tyler,

Yeah it does seem like lot's of people do want Mirrorless.

I am totally happy with my D850 and loved my D810 before I got the D850. I have no desire to go to Mirrorless either, but I do know lot's of people do seem to want the Mirrorless size for various reasons, so for Nikon users who do want the Mirrorless body, this is good news for them.

Well, I'm interested in seeing how the adapter will work. No real interest in buying a complete separate set of lenses though if I had to do that. I like having two bodies, and for the first time in years I am down to one. It's either this, or a second D850 at some point. If the adapter is seamless, at least for Nikon lenses, then I might consider it. Also price WILL be a consideration. To my way of thinking, this is the first real iteration and is going to be Nikon's D100 equivalent of their mirror-less journey. So... guess I'm saying be prepared to expense all of the cost...

Your comment Craig about this being the first iteration of a FF Mirrorless camera is also something to remember in terms of quality as most often the first model of something by any company is never the best, it's usually the 2nd version of it where things really pick up and get good. Granted Nikon has been making good quality DSLR's for many years, but that might be something to keep in mind for those thinking about getting this.

I think after the release announcement last night, and evaluating the cost of a new system (Z7 body only $100 more than a D850)... Plus it being a first iteration, I'll most likely end up just getting a second D850 for the next few years. It's tried and true. However, if a great opportunity surfaces for getting one of the mirrorless ones cheap, then it may come and go through my gear mix to try at some point....

It does look like a good start for Nikon, and within a few years I'd imagine they will really refine it.

The lens road map, particularly the 14-30 f4, has caught my attention more than the lack of mirror or the sensor. Reading Tamara Lackey's review on Adorama, I am left with the hope that the 14-30 and the 24-70 f4s will make a great landscape/travel kit.

(edit to correct typo on focal length)
