re: Samuel Boardman State Park

Hi y'all.

Has anybody been to this park ? Is it worth visting in June ? Somebody mentioned the name to me, I looked it up on the map & all the photos I see are very foggy, wet, is June too early a time to visit?

I would appreciate some tips, thanks in advance.

This is one of my favorite places along the Oregon coast. Since I retired I have camped in Brookings at Harris Beach State Park for over a couple of months worth of nights and roamed that corridor many times over. It is one of the more rugged and beautiful stretches of the OR coastline and is loaded with views that can be expansive on a clear day and full of wonderful small scenes when the skies close in. Most of my time in that area has been during late fall through late spring months and I haven't spent much time there in June at all. The surf will be lower of course but I don't know how that area fares for sunrises/sunsets this month with marine layers.

Samuel Boardman is definitely worth visiting. It's a neat State Park broken up into little bits. I have enjoyed my visits there. As to timing, Alan would know best. I have done it in the beginning of June last time and tied it into capturing the Rhodie blooms in the Redwoods in Northern California.

Alan, thank you. I have missed the park before due to the weather, I will make sure I check it out this time.

Thank you, Jim, this park sounds a great place for photographers.

@AlanLichty what are the rules for drone usage in those Oregon State parks? I might run up to the Redwoods next week and if I do, it's only a short jaunt over the border to get to the Oregon coast.

Drones are allowed in most Oregon State Parks. Along the coastline be careful to avoid flying near or over the sea stacks. All of the sea stacks and small islands are part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge (1800 of them!) and have a minimum flight floor of 2000' which means we can't fly over them. The water in between them is not part of the refuge (unlike the Washington coastline) so you are allowed to fly around them as long as you don't disturb the sea birds.

There are exceptions to the State Park rules - in particular Bandon is No-Fly as is the airspace between Cape Arago and the south jetty at Coos Bay. The area near Cannon Beach is also restricted from Arcadia Beach up to and including Ecola State Park.
