Red Overload

My first efforts to make a nice web image out of this one hit a red channel wall when I converted it to sRGB. The reds of this azalea in my backyard were simply too much for web colors. I finally resorted to doing all the final PS edits in 8 bit sRGB in order to get a workable image out of it. This plant is just getting started since only a couple of blooms are full out now but I liked the looks of it just after the rains earlier this week tapered off.

A very nice closeup but the reds do appear blown out. I've noticed that often with reds online and I've never been sure whether it's due to sensor "delta C" or a browser color management problem....or something else. Reviews of many consumer cameras note that oversaturation by 10% or so is common.

Thanks - this is after doing a considerable rework this morning. What looked great in Adobe RGB on my screen with 16 bit color went over the cliff with 8 bit sRGB.

Thanks Jameel - this actually looks a lot better than the first version. The first one lost almost all of the detail in the middle of the bloom when I converted to sRGB.

You did good on this Alan. I know the reds can really blow up so easily sometimes, well most times.

I did post one on azalea blooms recently that worked out well without tweaks but this wasn't one of them.

Good news! On my calibrated desktop monitor, the reds are much better. I should have looked there before judging from the laptop display. It's unfortunate that image quality varies so much with different devices.

Thanks - this is still quite a ways short of what the bloom looked like in 16 bit Adobe Pro PhotoRGB. I was genuinely horrified at what happened after converting the profile. I have had this problem before with intense reds when I grab a shot using Adobe's Project Indigo camera app on my iPhone 15 Pro. The native Apple photo app tends to yank this type of channel overload back a bit with their RAW photo outputs.
