here is a portrait from yesterday. This was my first time using a 40” diffuser over the subject at an angle similar to a soft box that I normally would use. I think I did well on this, many complements on it. I used my Nikon D850 with the Nikon 105mm f/1.4 @ f/1.4. I probably could have used f/2.8 but I was playing with the wide open thing that most are doing now. I suppose there is a time and place for wide open, it seems to have worked ok here. I like the soft light from the diffuser. It was about 18” above here head.

Hey Todd,

Sarah sure has a very pretty face, and a very natural look to her. Overall I like her pose and how you captured her. You have me thinking I need to call one of my friends and see if they are available and want some portrait shots done. I don't do portraits a lot anymore, but they are fun to do when you have the right person posing.

I was thinking shooting at 2.8 might have been good here. The reason I say that is at first glance what looks in focus in the image is her shirt just to the right of her hand. But then looking and thinking about how thin the focal plane must be at f1.4 perhaps it's her nose that was your focal point, and that part of her shirt got caught in that focal plane?

Maybe go back with a layer mask and a slight Gaussian blur and soften the shirt in that area?
