The month of the dead

In french Canadian culture November is the month of the dead. Is it the same in English/American culture ? Do you prefer horizontal or vertical framing ?

I prefer the vertical for this composition––both orientations work though. I like the light and shadows depicted in the vertical image. Both are nice.
