We spent a day and a half in Vienna. We bought public transport run around tickets that allowed us uninterrupted travel on trams, buses and trains throughout the city. We have previously visited Vienna and had an idea about what we wished to visit. Along with my usual 24-105 I brought my 12-24 and, on occasion, it wasn't wide enough. The centre of Vienna got a major overhaul in the mid 19thC with lots of new buildings as the rulers showed off their wealth. Strangely many of the buildings are neo-baroque.
This is St Stephens built between the 12thC and 14thC. This really needs to be shot from high up on one of the surrounding buildings to try and tame the perspective but this is my best attempt from ground level. The South tower is 460ft high
This is the Hofburg Palace, the principal palace of the Habsburg rulers built in the 13thC but expanded since. It is now the residence and workplace of the President of Austria.
Looking round shows the neo-gothic town hall on the left of the statue
2nd day
Votive church built in neo-gothic style in the mid 19thC
Votive inerior
even 12mm can't begin to show the size
The town hall neo-gothic 19thC lots of work constructing stages for summer concerts.
We visited the Belvedere, another palace, but now and art gallery as we wanted the view the work of Gustav Klimt
The Kiss, Klimt's most famous work, the gold colour is actually gold leaf.
A crop from another Klimt from his hyper-realism period "portrait of a woman". In my ignorance I didn't realise that Klimt had produced work like this but the detail is stunning although the ear looks a little smudgy.
My favourite image, my wife photographing a painting by Olga Wisnger-Florian titled Decayed cemetery in Goisern. We were both captivated by the luminosity and contrasts within the work from an artist that we had never heard of
Lastly on to Schönbrunn Palace originally a hunting lodge but later remodelled into a summer palace. this is the view of one of the three wings. The building work in front is for a series of free evening concerts by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Summer Night Concert - Vienna Philharmonic (wienerphilharmoniker.at)
A wander around the grounds including the world's oldest zoo still in operation.
Lastly the palm house
Then visited an open air market and then back to the boat for a well deserved drink. Ken
