My falls for today are a bit of a What Was tale. One of my favorite places in the Gorge was a neat short hike through dense forest followed by the trail dropping down into an overgrown basin featuring Elowah Falls. This is a view of the falls through the trees from a springtime visit in 2008:

The basin got hit hard during the Eagle Creek Fire in 2017 with most of the low vegetation scorched down to bare rocks. The trail was badly damaged and remained closed for quite a number of years due to frequent landslides along the switchbacks that led down into the basin below the falls. I found a spot where I could launch a drone and fly over the creek for a view of the falls in 2022. As you can see in the image below there were some trees that survived and quite a few standing but quite dead. Nearly all of the ground level vegetation was burned away and was only barely starting to grow back 5 years after the fire. The trail where I shot the image above from is visible just to the right of the creek. There used to be a footbridge that crossed the creek near the falls and the trail zigzagged up the slope to the left of the creek leading to an upper set of falls above the primary drop but it was incinerated with almost no visible remains.
