The Greater Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus) is a native of the Southwestern Desert. Roadrunner are related to cuckoos. They are primarily carnivores walking and running down prey and killing it by holding it in their bill and repeatedly slamming it against the ground. Their diet including snakes, frogs, scorpions, dragonflies, tarantulas, mice, and lizards.
Both parents care for the nest and feed their young. The full grown chick on right is begging to be fed.
Because Roadrunner have short wings; they can only fly a short distance. Here the roadrunner is gliding to a land from a tree.
