Thursday’s Task

I mostly do color imagery so this isn't my usual haunt by any means but from time to time I give it a try.

The Patriarchs in Zion National Park:

I agree with you Alan, I generally choose color, the camera’s default, and proceed with editing. However, as your images show, some landscape images benefit from the exclusion of color revealing an unseen beauty within the landscape image. I favor the Bisti images, the Lewis lodge image, and the Double Arch image—very nice! I love the Zion image’s edit of the darker sky—very nice as well. Thank you for sharing each of these with us.

Michael, beautiful tones in each of these B&W edits—love all three images. I love the composition of the first with the diagonal foreground receding into the strong imagery of the white-capped mountains and white cloud sky—nice! Much of the same could be attributed to the second gorgeous image too, but I like in this image the darker foreground leading the eye to the snowy mountain range. Nice clouds accompanying the composition. The last landscape image benefits from the beautiful reflection captured adding to its beauty—again very nice! Love the clouds framing the peaks too. Thank you for sharing!

Pardon my ignorance—could you identify this Paradise please?

Kyle, one word—Wow! I love the Mesquite Dunes image with the juxtaposition of light and dark values. I like the edge lighting of the foreground beach pebbles In the Iceland image with the darker foreground leading to lighter values of the waves and sky. The Bristlecone Pine is a beautiful B&W with the tree bark tones more clearly revealed in the B&W edit. The Glacier Point composition benefits from the prominent foreground tree “pointing” to Glacier Point—nice! The Tuolumne Meadows is another perfect B&W image with its many light and dark layers—I love this image! Thank you for sharing.

Thank you, John! The first two are in the Bishop, CA area - Owens Valley. The third is Kearsarge Lakes in Kings Canyon National Park.

Larry, I love the Right Mitten image composition—nice! Another favorite is the Great Sand Dunes N.P. image—wonderful composition and clouds! The Kanosha Pass captures a beautiful sky against the backdrop of varying values of the foliage—nice. The Green River image with the foreground tree aids its composition. Thank you for sharing.

I am also in the camp of B&W as an after thought. That said, here are some I worked in B&W.

Jameel, beautiful B&Ws created—I especially love the Arches images with all the textures revealed in the rocks—nice. My favorite might be the golf course with the beautiful reflection—very, very nice! I love the symmetry captured in the fountain image—with the wide range of tonal values and a reflection too! Nice! Thank you for sharing each of these!
