we were driving along a road north of Meeker, Colorado and spotted this old mining structure. It was obvious that it had had better days!

You are right it does look like a somewhat haphazard construction, with a strange mixture of building materials!

You are right it does look like a somewhat haphazard construction, with a strange mixture of building materials!

The goal for the miners was to get the goodies out of the ground and and flee. Long term considerations for onsite construction didn't exist. That kind of behavior for resource extraction goes back in time as far as we have known we could extract resources from the environment - well before we even had written records by the Greeks and the Romans.
