Boys...Really???

That is exactly the look on Buttercup's face (filly on right) is saying as Scooter (colt in middle) is telling his joke to Whiskey Pete (colt left). These are my three orphans...which I also thought of as the Title :). They were orphaned in the Wheeler Pass JMA (joint management area) emergency gather. Their moms were actually euthanized due to starvation as our range does not have the forage to support them. I work with the foster family every day with these little ones to gentle them, get them used to people, lift their feet for hoof trims, get used to loading & unloading from the trailer etc. They are ready for adoption & I hear we have three people very interested so please keep your fingers crossed!

When we first got them in they were from a week old to around three weeks old. We fed them round the clock every two hours for the first month or so either with buckets or bottle or syringe. They are now weaned and Buttercup & Scooter are right around 3 months old, and Whiskey is close to 4 months old.

They look quite healthy in this image. Sounds like a pretty serious amount of work to prep them for adoption but far better than the fate that would have awaited them in the wild. Nice work - both for the image as well as the horses.

It really is, it takes a village & we have a small one but we get it done! Thank you Alan!

Below is about a week after we got them in. Scooter had been following his mom so far for water & food, he wore his hooves down to practically nothing & had abscesses in both back & one front foot. We had to give him epson salt soaks every day. The pic below that is not one of mine, but it is Buttercup & her mom in holding the day she was brought in. AS you can see our herd was not fairing well.

Thanks for posting these Darcy! It’s sad the mothers were put down but it’s great to see how these young ones are doing. And your first funny looks just like you describe it! :)

Thank you for your work with these wild horses.
