Frisco Pier

Last September I took a trip to the Outer Banks to photograph the Frisco Pier over the course of several days...it is one of my most favorite piers that I have ever photographed. At the time it was supposed to be torn down that fall...so I thought I was going to be documenting it in its final state of disrepair...well, like anything with the Government, they didn't follow through, and they didn't tear it down. But this was one of the images I captured during that few days...a big sunset shot was one of the comps I wanted during the trip. I have not figured out if I can talk my wife into letting me go back again this fall...

Very nice Travis.
And you do have to document. There are so many things here that have been torn down, or bulldozed, just to put in a new motel. Or just renovated and all old character removed.

Hey Travis,

That is a really cool old pier. Definitely has to be a top 5 old rickety pier.

The clouds are really awesome and provide a great backdrop, and I like this a lot. If there was one thing that I wish was different I wish there were no foot prints in the sand. If you get back again, maybe you can get there in a slightly higher tide so you can keep the same angle for the composition, but have the tide coming in far enough to wash away peoples foot prints.

Thank you sir. This pier was privately owned, and then I think the state bought it, it was pretty run down...a lack of maintenance, a harsh hurricane prone environment and mother nature have not been kind to it. The story is mixed on what the state plans to do with the space if they ever finally tear it down...I will be sad when its gone.

Hey Jim, it is my favorite old pier...the patina and damage just add to the character and provide a lot more photographic opportunities. I like your idea of getting the sand with no footprints...

Excellent work and yeah, I too am glad you 'documented' the scene!
Thank you Barry. I have a collection of images on this pier now...and will remember them fondly...

Nice setting - glad you had the patience to catch this light for the portrait. Any idea on what state the pier is in now?
Thanks Alan. Patience was needed...several days of shooting the same subject sometimes wears you down...as for how it is now, the hurricanes that came through last year took more of it down, the tripods down at the end are gone, and a large section in the middle was reduced to a much smaller section...

Great photo!
Thank you Bob.
