Waterfall Wednesday 10/23/2019

Wednesday is here so time for another round of waterfalls :)

I finally got to drive the reopened Historic Highway in the Columbia River Gorge this week and have to say up front that it was a sorely missed playground - for just about everyone in this metro area. Even on a Monday all of the waterfall parking lots were full and several had cars waiting for someone to leave so they could get their spot. I don't want to even think about what things must look like on weekends.

This is Horsetail Falls from one of my favorite vantage points:

Pile on and let's celebrate falling water.

Very nice. Did you have a chance to drive the whole route? How does it look?
Yes - the whole of the Historic Highway from Dodson down to Corbett is open now but with quite a few caveats. All of the road between the Oneonta Tunnel down to Multnomah Falls (heading west in this case) is a no stopping zone. They have put up concrete barriers across all of the trailhead parking areas and roped off/coned off all other pullouts. Signs in this area don't mince words - it is an immediate tow-away zone if you park anywhere along there. Easy to see why - rocks are still coming down the hillside and falling onto the roadway every day. Driving the highway is different with a lot of open skies overhead now after so many trees either burned or had to be felled because of the fire.

Two side canyons of note: I made a point of getting in the slow lane of freeway traffic as I approached McCord Creek. I thought I had caught glimpse of this sight once before from the freeway and can now confirm it - Elowah Falls are fully visible from the freeway and the slopes along McCord Creek leading up to the falls are pretty much bare rocks. Oneonta Gorge has the same look to it right down to the bridge on the Historic Highway.

Thanks for starting this Alan, and a very nice historic image. I assume none of us will be alive when it looks like this again.

Here is Little Deer Creek falls up by the Duchesne Tunnel head.
Actually I hope you are still alive - my image is current and was shot Monday morning :D

Clashnessie Falls in NW Scotland, this image has had a 2 minute trip to photoshop so you may see these falls again when I have more time to process it properly. The weather was typically Scottish as you can see with this image taken just after lunchtime. Ken

Here is another from the Columbia River Gorge ( Latrouelle Falls). This is pre-fire and I don't know if this area survived. I took it because it portrayed columnar jointing well.
Nice shot of the columnar basalt at Latourell Doug.

Fire damage at those falls was limited to the area above the falls. This is also true for Wahkeena Falls as well and I have new shots of Wahkeena from Monday as well. The Historic Highway heading east from Corbett up to Bridal Veil Falls has been open since late 2017 and the section between Bridal Veil Falls and the end of the highway (for cars) at Dodson just opened a few weeks ago.
