Winged Wednesday – October 8, 2025 open to anything with wings

That’s a fabulous scene, Roger. You can feel the tension in every feather—the Green Heron coiled like a spring, all focus and patience. The intensity practically hums off the frame.

Welcome home, Trent! Those five shots are spectacular—proof that even Denmark’s wind and rain can’t dampen a good birder’s eye. Sounds like Fanø Island rewarded your perseverance beautifully. Hope Saskatoon feels just a little less gray after that adventure! All 5 photos are awesome. The...

Beautifully photographed, Alan, the Canada Jay looks right at home on that stone wall. I always carry trail mix when I’m in Canada Jay habitat; they’ll happily eat right from your hand!

Fabulous shot, Doug — the honey bee is exquisite, but that yellow bee balm absolutely steals the show. A perfect flight-macro duet!

Thanks, Alan, for showing up every week and always posting photos worth seeing. The stormy shore with the Black Oystercatchers is terrific—40 years ago, when I was listing my sightings, this species was my 500th ABA bird. Wonderful to see them again through your lens. And your shot of the...

Jeffrey, all five of your Pantanal photos are exceptional. The Jabiru storks in the nest are fabulous—I climbed that same high tower for a similar view. We always called the Rusty-margined Guan a Chestnut-bellied Guan, though I’ve never been entirely sure which name is right. Your Boat-billed...

Where feathers, flutters, and flight steal the show! Whether they’re zipping, sunbathing, or striking a midair pose, we celebrate anything with wings—birds, bugs, bats, or butterflies. All photos are welcome, and thank you for playing! This week, I’m contributing five bird portraits. At first...

Winged Wednesday 9.17.2025: No Theme, Just Wings

Two superb photos, Alan. That’s a lot of cormorants (13!) striking a various poses on those pilings, and the close-up portrait of the juvenile Red-tail is a real winner. Thirteen cormorants make a chorus, but one hawk is a solo act worth the admiring.

Winged Wednesday 9.17.2025: No Theme, Just Wings

Those are fantastic macros, Trent — the detail you pull out in your bug photography is unreal. That fly-on-fly shot is both wild and baffling: since adult flies usually feed by regurgitating digestive fluids and then lapping them back up, it doesn’t exactly scream “mealtime.” Maybe it’s a...
