A Little Bit of Fall

My annual trip to the Upper Midwest resulted in this year being the worst fall color season in the 7 or 8 years that I switched to going there for fall colors.

The weather has been too warm, so it never had that cold snap to trigger the fall colors. The maples did change color, maybe they didn't need the cold snap, but a few days after I got there they had crazy winds that stripped those trees bare. So the rest of the trees were still green, with a small mix of yellow.

Now there were pockets with great color. Parts of the North Shore looked great, but it was a lot of work and driving to find those pockets.

I did capture the Northern Lights one night, so that alone helps to make up for the lack of color. And I did find some pockets which helped as well.

This tree I found in Father Hennepin State Park last week.

This is with the iPhone 15 Pro Max as I need to get to my images still. When I have had time I have been focusing on the Northern Lights.

All comments are welcome,

Sounds like Mother Nature can throw us some curveballs no matter how well laid out your plans might be. Still some nice colors in this particular scene of some maples. Looks like a lot of color still come at least in this case.

Things are just getting started down in the urban areas but I need to get up into the Gorge tomorrow and check out what's going on up there.

Yep, one just has to go with the flow.

Fall color in Kalispell has been weak also. The larches are still mostly green, likely due to the warm weather we'd been having. We had snow last night, though, so the yellow is now coming on fast.

That's interesting to hear that it wasn't just the Midwest.

I am hoping to catch some more color here somewhere lower. In Wyoming, the cottonwoods are really turning golden. So there is that for me. But I really enjoy the mix of the upper Midwest with the reds, oranges, purples, and gold.

That is nice color with the saturated oranges. I hear you about expectations and disappointments. Doesn’t always work out what we expect.

Jim, now you have mentioned it, I think the weather pattern has been very unusal this year, I missed the peak of foliage in the Eastern Sierra.
