a mid winter road trip.

I feel guilty about not contributing any new images this winter. We have beautiful areas around here, but every thing east of here is no access for me, and that's where the beautiful places are.

So I decided to start checking out the west desert, which is a vast area west of Salt Lake and Utah Lake and from the salt flats far to the south. It's also the eastern side of the great basin.

Yesterday I drove to a place called "Little Sahara" Supposedly an area of sand dunes, but winter is the wrong time as they are partly snow covered and all muddy making walking nearly impossible. But more than that, it's an area used for off road vehicles, two of which were racing around as I was there.

I did see some nice mountains along my travel and may get back out to some of them after the next snow. I tried to get to the higher ground in this image, but the mud defeated me.

I am just posting this to show I am still trying.

Hey Ben, it’s awesome to see you trying to get new photos. Your efforts here at FocalWorld are inspiring and very appreciated.

Maybe I need to swing by your place and I can pick you up to go shoot in Bryce or somewhere.

Looks like the west desert as I remember it - I never did figure out what the best time of year was to get something photogenic out of it.

It depends. Usually spring or fall is best. Winter just depends on how much moisture there has been because as Ben stated, the mud becomes a problem for both vehicle and foot traffic.

We camped at Little Sahara when my son was probably 10 years old or so with our ATV's. Rained for two days straight & boy do I remember that mud LOL.
