A Snow Person

Our woodturning club encouraged members to make snowmen for our December meeting when we will have a seasonal celebration with hot chocolate and look at the various snowmen.
Here are some images of the 'Snow Person' that I created. The body is turned from an old piece of Pine that was about 13" in diameter and 14" high. it had split down the length during drying over the last 10 or so years. I burnt the inside of the gap and then painted it black. I filled in the gap for the face and turned some eyelets for the threaded bodice. The eyes and teeth are turned from Ebony that came from the black keys on an old piano. I made the decorations hanging from the hat from various woods and painted them.

Very impressive woodworking! What did you use for a finish?
Thanks Alan.. There are a few different finishes. The body and hat are finished with Tung oil, left to dry and then buffed with a three part buffing system. Many of the hat decorations have a gesso finish and then painted with coloured markers as they rotate on the lathe. I really appreciate your support and interest.

You will always get my attention when it comes to woodworking. I don't have a lathe but just about everything else. I mostly make cabinets and furniture. My shop:

Now that looks like a fantastic shop Alan... I'd love to see pictures of some of your cabinets and furniture.
I did a couple of posts in the Sit and Chat forum a few years back on building various things. This thread has some shots of a bedroom dresser in progress. I built a smaller 5 drawer dresser and nightstand units in the same style and wood since then.

A very ingenious snowperson -- certainly not like any other I've seen. But I'm also impressed with the lighting that shows the dimensionality so well. I think I have the same flotone background that you used.

Thanks Des... i did take this shot in a studio setting with constant source LED light and a seamless paper backdrop. I have started using the masking feature in LR to add a gradient to the background and find it a lot easier than trying to get a gradient with my lighting.
