Agitated and on edge, the bison cow curls her tail in warning—moments before turning on the orphaned calf to drive it from the herd.
When a bison curls their tail, it typically signals alertness, excitement, or agitation. A slightly curled tail often indicates the bison is aware of something unusual in its surroundings, while a tightly curled tail over the back is a clear sign of heightened agitation or an imminent charge. Occasionally, a raised tail simply means the bison is about to urinate or defecate. However, if a curled tail is accompanied by behaviors like pawing the ground or snorting, it’s crucial to keep a safe distance, as bison are unpredictable when stressed.
