AK Trip - 1st Image

Claudia and I are back from a spectacular trip to Alaska. We were not originally thinking to head back there yet as we had higher priority destinations in mind, but when we were invited to join some friends on an expedition cruise to the area we accepted. Our trip was split into 2 portions. The 1st part was aboard a small expedition-style cruise ship with a total complement of 80, including our fantastic crew. This smaller ship had us into many intimate areas in the wilds of Southeast Alaska that larger ships simply cannot visit, and more importantly we were off the ship everyday and often setting foot on land that is only accessible by boat or perhaps small planes (only about 1% of people that travel to these areas ever actually set foot on land…) The weather that was forecast to be rainy for the entire duration of our trip instead cleared up for the 2nd half of our stay and made for some amazing views. We were off the ship everyday in a new location. We even managed to experience the Northern Lights on board the ship, although paradoxically, the display was actually better down in many areas of the lower 48 than it was up in Alaska due to the rare and very strong nature of the electromagnetic storms that occurred. The 2nd short portion of the trip occurred after we finished our cruise when we flew from Juneau to Anchorage. From there we drove the Seward Highway down to Seward, experiencing jaw dropping views, and stayed 2 nights there before heading back to Anchorage and flying home. All in all, a very special trip that exceeded my expectations in many ways.

Here is the first post from the trip - a shot snapped out of our skiff as we cruised along Tidal Inlet in Glacier Bay National Park. Comments and critiques most welcome.
