Assorted Day-Lilies

One of my neighbors has a really nice collection of day lilies growing right alongside the sidewalk so I paid them a visit last evening. I started to see if I could identify the specific hybrids but discovered there were too many variants that were too similar to each other to make that worthwhile. The hardest part about shooting these is finding specimens that don't have a shriveled up bloom from yesterday in the frame. The blooms really do only last for a day.

There are so many types of those. I think Day Lily works well!

I didn't know they died so fast though. You did good on framing these.

Thanks Jim - the craziest part about Day Lilies lies in the fact that they actually aren't Lilies (Lilium) at all but are part of a different genus (Hemerocallis). There are thousands of hybrids of these plants with just about every color scheme you can imagine.

i thought they only came in yellow and orange. beautiful set, i wouldn't have pegged the last one as a day lily, it looks a bit different from the long, spikey petals i'm used to seeing.

Thanks Beth - Day Lilies come in a zillion different shapes and colors after being subjected to hybridization for over 100 years. I started out trying to find names for these and got overwhelmed by the sheer number of variants that were similar to these. That last one in particular could be one of about a dozen different hybrids and I finally threw my hands up and decided the only way to know which was which was to look at the tags the original plants were delivered with. The petals can be round and smooth, narrow and smooth, narrow with frilly edges, wide with frilly edges, you name it there is probably a variant to match.
