Aurora on King's Birthday Weekend, Kakanui NZ

All the apps I have that are meant to alert me to the possibility of an aurora were going wild yesterday, so I warned my partner that I would probably be dashing out as soon as it got dark. Sure enough, just around 6:45p a friend texted me to say "get out here!" so that's what I did. I headed to the waterfront just near where our new house is going up (I could not be bothered to undo the gate and ascend to the hill where the house stands, and thought it might be nice to get the waterfront in the foreground) and wound up staying there for around 90 minutes while the display went on and on. I eventually decided to pack it in and head home to warm up and go to bed, but then at 11pm it went bonkers again so out I went once more, this time starting out at the lookout point nearby, but access was closed so I took one shot at the cul-de-sac over the new housing development just because the rays were so wild, but then decamped to a beach nearby instead. That display was even more dramatic. More to come!

That's so awesome! Love what you got here.

I missed it because I didn't get a warning here in Yosemite due to bad cell reception where I was. :(

I am setting my cameras up tonight as there is a possibility of a secondary wave. I won't get any warnings, I will just set my cameras up and keep an eye out. I will be up in high altitude back country, so it will be a beautiful night and I will at least come away with the Milky Way.

That's a shame--it was quite a show! On the off chance that we'll get another shot tonight, I've got all my batteries charging and am leaving my gear in the car.
