Black Canyon Beams

After a couple of weeks of shooting Wildflowers in Colorado last month, I took a slight break and diversion over to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. I had never stopped here before because all of the photos I had seen of it were extremely boring and bad if I can be so bold. I didn't think there was anything to shoot. Well Alisa had decided about a week prior to stop in there and from her report it seemed that there was actually treasure in those hills. So I decided that I needed to also visit here.

There was a wildfire just on the other side of the hill, driving in it had this huge smoke plume. The wind was shifting around and the smoke would blow in different directions. At one time I had to put on a handkerchief and cover my eyes with clear safety glasses I carry around for smoke and sand. There is some smoke in this shot, you can see the color variation from the regular clouds.

Jim

Oh, and Amy reminded me yesterday that I still hadn't processed any shots from here, so I figured I better get on it. :)

As with one of the earlier posts of this place I am fascinated by the veining in the rock face on the far side of the canyon. Add in the sun rays from the clouds and the smoke and it's a very interesting image. Glad I can't smell the smoke through my screen.

That is some nice rock and rays ya got here Jim. It just shows that many places can be gems under the proper light and conditions.

I like the rays, and the marks on the rocks draw you eye into the image. How did you like this area? I almost went there last year, but storms moved in, and forecast wasn't good the following days either.

I am glad you liked this Dustin. I am hooked on the Black Canyon now. I plan on going back when I am there for fall colors. It’s defintely worth the visit.

OMG, I'm totally blown away ....wow...wow....wow!!!

What a magnificent job....can I say WOW again

And you may be so bold!!! I agree, all the pictures I've seen have been boring too (including mine for sure). You should introduce a copy of this to the visitors center, this is far better than anything they have there.

You just set the bar much higher! WOW

Thank you so much for those very kind words Amy, you put a huge smile on my face! :)

And thanks for confirming my idea that Black Canyon appears to not have been presented well in the past by photographers. Not sure how that had happened, but a few of us can start showing it’s true beauty to the world! Thanks for the suggestion about getting this photo into the visitor center, I will check on that this fall when I am back.

This Black Canyon series by the three of you is an inspiration. If I had seen smoke, I would've gone the other direction...
