A long time ago we used to have a Saturday feature entitled Salvage Saturday where the goal was to take a cull-worthy image and see what you could do to salvage something workable out of it. In the spirit of that old theme I decided to scrounge around for a suitable candidate and try to put lipstick on the pig.
The original was a shot taken at Ruby Beach pretty much in the dark with a Canon 5D Mark II. This camera was anything but a stellar performer for noise levels in the first place but in this case I shot an 80 second exposure at ISO 3200. The scene was much darker than the capture depicts given the length of the exposure and the sensor noise levels were quite unacceptable.
The original shot with no edits beyond the color profile and image size:
I ran the RAW file through DxO PureRAW 5 for a sensor noise cleanup and imported the RAW file back into Lightroom where I cropped the image for a more pleasing composition and then spent some serious time working on the light before moving the image into Photoshop for final touchups.
The rework:
C&C always welcome.
Feel free to append a salvage job of your own if you wish.
