Blueberries

After seeing Trent's currants I decided to grab a shot of one of our blueberry bushes this morning. We got some very rare late July rain yesterday (first time since 2001) in what is usually our driest part of the year so a few droplets on the leaves were a nice touch. I have already harvested over 5 gallons of berries that are now in our freezer and still picking a couple of quarts per day.

Thanks Michael - blueberries don't all ripen at once so it takes roughly 3 weeks to get the full harvest from these bushes.

Thanks Jim - after what all I harvested today after taking the shot above we now have just under 7 gallons in the freezer. We may be about to run out of freezer space I do need to wind the harvest up as we have a deposit for getting our house painted starting some time next week and the bushes are right up against the house so the painters are going to have to cover the bushes up.

That is so interesting Alan. The only blueberries I have picked are much closer to ground in the Northern Boreal Forest. These look delicious and much easier to pick. Five gallons is a lot of work and lots of processing.

Thanks Trent - a couple of the plants are actually well over my head and I resorted to grabbing a branch and pulling it down so I could pick the berries. I intend to get a bit aggressive with my pruning shears in the spring to get better control over their size. Most of the work is picking them since they don't all ripen at once. This is now peak ripening so I am getting 2 quarts/day but I might be pulling the plug here since we are running out of freezer space. Today's haul was a full gallon since I didn't pick yesterday in the rain.
