Convict Lake

This is another image that is several years old, from an autumn trip to the Eastern Sierra with the old "West Coast Photographers" Facebook group. I had high hopes for this sunrise at Convict Lake. The color was peaking and we braved the complaints of people on the shore and made our way out onto the rocks around the boat launch to get a different foreground. And then the light fizzled. I had previously processed this as a B&W because of the lack of light. I did manage to crank the contrast in the sky and get some definition in the clouds for that rendering.

This weekend I figure that if I could pull out detail in the B&W, I could probably do it in color too. I started with PureRAW to get a good starting point and added contrast to the bright areas in the sky to make it more interesting. In the end I think it worked out OK. Any thoughts are welcome.

Lovely image Kyle. In a situation where the b and w version had more punch I would overlay a colour version on top and select color mode. Alternatively have the colour version on the bottom, overlay the b and w version and select luminosity. I find that it gives me a bleach bypass look. Ken

I like it, it shows off the nice colors and you have returned some interest to the sky to make it an addition instead of a distraction. The classic awesome 'Kyle-Jones-style' amazing DOF is once again adding the cherry on top. Love it really - glad you reworked this one!
