Crowning Dream Lake

On my recent time in Colorado I hiked several times up to Dream Lake to shoot the sunset with the best ice bubbles I could find. While these are not the cool 3D methane bubbles Kyle shot up in Banff, these are my poor man bubbles. :)

How solid is the surface - it looks like you are out on it. Looking up the river like this is nice with the reflection leading right up to the clouds.

Looks cold.

Hi Jim,

It looks like the river was flash frozen and the ripples are stuck in place. Are you right above a small frozen falls? It looks like there's a shelf about a third of the way from the bottom. Either way I'm liking Colorado more and more.

Thanks Alan! The surface was mostly frozen pretty deep looked like about 12” or so. But I did find that on the east end of the lake it’s more shallow with rocks poking up through the ice, and I did step through the ice with my foot. Fortunately I pulled my foot back up before the boot went more then halfway into the water. My Solomon’s are water proof, so I was good. It was also good that I did step cautious keeping on foot on a solid surface or rock before stepping with the next foot.

It’s really windy up there, 20mph winds seem pretty common, so that is probably why the ice is not totally flat in areas.

This is a very neat scene, I like the ice bubbles and the lead in to the mountain and the cool clouds behind.

I am glad you like this Tim!

I have been having the same thoughts myself in regards to Colorado. I am ready to go back again!

Interesting place. Is that a crack in the ice from the bottom left towards the center? If so I'd be very careful stepping on that ice.

The bubbles work well as leading into the scene.

I'm not sure what I am looking at here, Jim. It almost looks like small bubbles and rocks in the stream below the surface. Can you educate me on this? Nice image!

Hey Doug, it's an oblong lake, and it doesn't appear to be super deep, at least along the sides. There was a lot of rocks poking up, cool cracks in the ice, and those bubbles. They weren't methane cool type of bubbles, but still pretty cool indeed. Now on the far end of the lake which I will post a photo of tomorrow I think, the ice has no bubbles but is more of an opaque feel with long cracks and other personalities.

Glad you liked this! :)
