Delicate in December

A few years ago I did a one night trip to Utah in late December, hoping to get some interesting (and less crowded) winter conditions in Arches and Canyonlands. This is my sunset at Delicate Arch. The sky toyed with me, giving me hope of something spectacular before settling on "I guess that'll work". There were more people than I expected so I had to shoot between people standing under the arch to get their picture taken. A little photoshop work erased the rest (multiple exposures made that easy).

Any thoughts are welcome.

I like the scene you ended up with in this image. Bummer the skies didn't cooperate but that's an outcome I seem to encounter more often than not.

You hit on one of the main reasons I tend to avoid a lot of places like this anymore with the seeming endless supply of people who have to be "seen" posing in or in front of some famous landmark. I thought maybe the shoulder season was perhaps now a crowded time but you are describing the same situation for the middle of the winter? Good job on removing their presence from your result.

This looks pretty nice Kyle! I am sure you wanted a better sky, but this does work. The main show is the arch anyway, the rest is just icing on the cake. :)

They are coming faster then you can outrun them I think Alan!

There almost seems like there is no off season anymore. There are a lot more people photographing then ever before, and there are way more tourists doing their touristy selfie thing. Not sure how they can be avoided really anymore. I have chosen to just accept it and embrace it and hope to meet a few new friends on the way. I think you are going to just have to choose valium...

Lovely.

The answer to the crowds is to get further from the road. After about 5 miles most of the dilettantes fade away. This is hard to do in Arches since it's such a small park.

Very nice Kyle, I live in Utah and have been to Arches many times, but the posers have always kept me from going up here.

Most of the crowd seems to thin out by about a mile and a half from the parking lots. By 5 miles you will have the place to yourself :)

For quite a few parks like Arches most of the trails are short so there is no escape.

Beautiful capture Kyle, the crowd issue became a thing few years ago, i envy those who have the opportunity and means to explore new places.
I would consider warming up the patch above the distant mountains a bit and cooling down the top of the sky, to emphasize that warm light from the right...

Cheers.
