Dry in the High Country - Some Photos

I went to Rocky Mountain National Park today for some hiking and photography.

So far this year we haven't had much snow, at all. I thought at the higher elevations of some of the trails, that the snow would be better, but it was nearly dry at 10,000 ft. There was some snow in the shade, but the sunny parts of the trail were dry as a bone.

Snowshoes this time of year is normally a must for this area. All I needed today was crampons for the icy parts.

I took my digital camera as well as my Zone VI 4x5.

Here are a few digital shots, taken with a Fuji XT-1 and a 720nm IR filter. I still have to develop and scan in my 4x5 negatives.

Wow - That's not much snowpack for this time of year but it doesn't shock me. In my area (Pacific NW) we have had a similarly dry December with 0.37" of rain where we usually have over 5".

I do like the scene in that first image although it looks more like summer than winter.

Hey Andrew,

Some nice work with these. The IR is cool to get a nice B&W look. My favorites of these are #2 as I really like that pathway look, and though the light is dappled in the scene which can often cause issues it doesn't seem to negatively impact this shot. My other favorite is the last one, with just that one single tree this is great minimalistic shot.

I had heard that there was no snow there, but it does look like you guys have some snow coming later this week perhaps.

Thanks everyone. Getting some snow this Thursday, but only a few inches.

Here's a couple of 4x5 Large Format film shots from the weekend hike. The film I used didn't work like it should have (it was a new box), really grainy and some of the shots didn't turn out. These two were all that I got out of the 6 I shot.

Taken with a Zone VI 4x5, first one with a Fujinon SW 125mm F5.6 lens and the second with a Kodak Ektar 203mm F7.7 lens with the rear cell removed. Shot on Fomapan 200 using a #12 filter and developed in Pyrocat MC for 8.5 minutes.

It's interesting to look at these large format images and ponder what our photography has morphed into. There's a certain feeling of soul to these last two images that for all our pixels in our DSLRs we don't quite reach......
